Now opening, with Tigerbeetle CEO Joran Greef explaining the history of the conference (they wanted to go windsurfing) and the purpose (systems broadly— distributed, mental, long term, etc). "Is software engineering, or is it more than engineering: art? It's both."

------- "DuckLake - The SQL-Powered Lakehouse Format for the Rest of Us", @hannes.muehleisen.org, #sd25 DuckLake was released just a month or two ago. Loved databases for a long time, his first car had license plate "SQL 1337". Confession: gave a talk where he said "Distributed? NO."

DuckDB is a database made in Amsterdam. "Gives us great pride, because usually software projects come from somewhere else." What is a lakehouse? Basically a cross between a database and a datalake. Originally, databases put data storage and compute on a single node, which is efficient...

...but does it scale? "I hate that question." Originally people tried to scale by adding more nodes. A primary ("in the netherlands we have Kings") and replica databases. "Then we ruined it with hadoop", moving from dbs to text files. "Fortunately, we moved on from that." #sd25
