The basic fallacy here is that public opinion on these issues is strongly-held and immutable, which is plainly false: witness immigration - imagine had we gone all-in with the poll-sniffers on Trump's immigration policies in early 2025. Empty centrists have no values except winning, yet they lose.

We should have values, which will allow us to have enemies, which will allow us to pick fights and win them. Too many of our elder punditry still live in 1996, believing Ds are one Sister Souljah moment away from electoral domination - they would shun all fights, and retreat into genial blandness.
