Amazon will pay $20.5 million to settle allegations that two of its Oregon data centers helped contaminate groundwater. This is exactly why communities across the country are organizing to stop data centers — and winning. Never doubt your power to change the system.

They make a billion contaminating the water and pay a fine of $20 million. That's a $980 million profit. The punishment doesn't fit the crime

Fines and settlements are of absolutely no use to “stop” corporations. It is a spit in the ocean to them. In a just system they would be dragged through the courts as criminals.

Medical bills sit downstream of cleanup: you can’t remediate a aquifer and still leave families paying. Any “settlement” should include a health fund tied to exposure, plus monitoring that lasts longer than the PR cycle.

BBC UK has been showing interviews with MPs who seem obsessed with data centers and the need for energy to power them. AI is quickly becoming burdensome to the human population while simultaneously threatening to unemploy said human population. There may need to be a collective resistance movement.

Amazon did not contaminate water, farmers did. The only thing Amazon did was pumping up contaminated water and evaporating part, leaving the nitrates in less water, to higher concentration. Just as farmers spraying their fields do.

Great testimony on social media from the Baraboo WI area. Woman owns a horse farm and describes at the local meeting how it affected her source of water.

What change? Amazon pays a pittance to avoid a legal challenge, and continues bad behaviour? This is normal business practice in the US. Corporations mess things up, then pay a small settlement to get away Scott free.

Texas water sources are all near landfills chemical companies fertilizer companies. They are lakes with power plants and drill sites all around them and then nobody wonders why people said "it must have been something in the water".

THEN this is why the 'building association' lobbyists are meeting with Senators and Congressmen to set in motion new legislation that would 'limit' the amount of civil damages if sued for pollution(s), and to lower the amount of EPA fines. Graham's group met with NC about 3 months ago.

And in Maine, Mills ( running for senate seat ) gives the same ole corporate razz-ma-tazz, "But Jay needs the jobs" Balderdash, they need clean water and air.
