Rather than allowing humanists to contribute to Radio 4's Thought for the Day, the BBC's current format requires all speakers to frame political and current affairs commentary through a religious or scriptural lens. Yet half of the UK is non-religious so why not let us speak?

"Thought for the day" is the most cringe worthy part of what is now a terrible programme of right wing bigotry. A sad shadow of its former self. We are light years away from Lionel Blue and Brian Redhead.

My parents used to listen to Radio 4 in the morning over breakfast when I was growing up (30-plus years ago). I used to groan every day when Thought For The Day came on, I used to call it Conversion Corner. I doubt the passage of thirty years has made it more relevant.

The whole notion of 'thought for the day' is dated and deeply cringe, but if it must remain it should at least reflect that a growing percentage - now 37% - of the population have no religious beliefs at all.

Humanists, don't campaign to be part of #TFTD. Campaign for its removal. A slot of embarrassing political opinions and moralising, masquerading as religious musing. "What would Jesus/Buddha/Muhammad do?" What sensible, objective, informed, evidence based intellect cares? #R4Today

At the very least there should be balance, a response saying "we know this is bullshit because ...." or "the speaker fails to mention that.....". The unchallenged claims of virtue from faith groups is cringe worthy.

Is it because Thought for the Day is specifically for a religious or faith-based take on current affairs? Almost every other program frames things through a non-religious lens. If you want to define humanism as a faith, then you are good.

This is the brief for Thought for the Day: "Reflections from a faith perspective on issues and people in the news." I don't see an issue with people of faith getting a three minute slot on Radio 4 once a week.

Long stopped listening to the Today Programme but when I did TFTD was a a cue to switch off along with ‘Gary from Sport’ 30 mins later. The content was inane because of the editorial requirements. Letting it die would seem the best option.
