A Connecticut lawmaker wants movie theaters to post the real start time of a movie - what it would be after all the advertisements, trailers, and other stuff. bit.ly/4aUkH9F

I don't think this is going to go far TBH... As much as some people care about this, the majority of people who go to the theater don't, they actually like the pre-ads/trailers that often start at the time they list. It's part of the package, regardless of who dislikes it.

Thing is most theater chains also already have a note for all showings that customers should give around 20 or so mins for ads/previews/trailers before the movie itself. That stuff is already there, so I don't see this type of case going further than some want it to.

Theaters in CT don't have that, so this could be a local thing for my state. Either way, the bill isn't going to even be considered. It's a silly thing to try and push when much bigger and more important problems are happening.

Won't that just mean that advertisers will stop paying for advertising before movies, since nobody will turn up to see the ads, which will drive up ticket prices or put movie theatres out of business? It's like adverts on the radio - they're annoying, but they pay for the station.

I actually don't like this for 2 reasons, first it'd kill the already starving cinemas because ad rates would tank with nobody showing up to see them, and also whilst the car and perfume ads are whatever I actually like being shown new movies in the film trailers

Indeed. Shit is annoying to sit through advertising from the theater chain. Only to be subjected to more advertising for movies that are coming. Thought I was watching a movie, not basic cable.

Well, 2 reasons: 1. Shitposting feels kind of rewarding, even though it shouldn’t. 2. As a lawmaker, I would hope that this person would spend their time on something more important than when movies start. They are in a position to actually do something.

What I have realized, if you go to a mom and pop (locally owned or a small regional chain) there are way less commercials vs national chains that have nearly 30 mins of commercials before the previews start. My local small chain starts less than 10 mins after the ticket time.

this isn't even necessary at all because the previews and ads are all part of the movie going experience and it doesn't take all that long for them to finish up anyway (people just don't have any patience anymore) plus you have time to get snacks refills and if need be use the bathroom

Just went to see Mufasa. Time advertised was 13:50, actual start time was 14:15. I don't mind the trailers and such per se, but we'd have probably had a coffee in the foyer before going in if we knew we had an extra 25 minutes.

On one hand who really cares? You're already in the theater what are you gonna do pace around the lobby for an extra 10mins to avoid the trailers? But also it would be nice to get the exact start time if you're doing the last bathroom break and need to know when to start heading out.

And ya know I know this and I tell myself “you don’t need to get there when it says it’s starting” but then I convince myself what if THIS is the one time they start it on time and I show up 10 minutes early and sit for 35 minutes

How do people not realize there's a minimum of 15 minutes of trailers before hand? Our local theater is always 20 minutes of trailers so we know we have a little time if we arrive 5 minutes late to start time.

I don't know if this was always the case where you live. We've also always had 15-25 minutes of trailers before, but the correct start time had always been announced. Now we've got tons of latecomers who keep miscalculating how long ads will take 😴.

I'd settle for movie theaters being subject to volume restrictions. Movies are so loud now that it's painful for me to go without earplugs. I refuse to risk hearing loss just for entertainment. I constantly see kids brought to see movies who don't have a choice and will lose part of their hearing.
