Nuclear waste really is just a political problem

No. No, it's not. Really. By 2050, even if *no* new NPP is built, US needs two Yucca Mtns. 90000 tons of SNF are stored at US reactor sites. US adds about 2000tn/year. Statutory limit for Yucca Mtn is 70000tn. To triple nuclear by 2050, US would need reprocessing 😱 or dozens of Yucca Mtns 🤦🏽♂️.
At a nominal growth rate of 1.8%, we would need 10 Yucca Mountain Project-sized repositories, or improve the utilization of the first repository by a factor of 10. At a growth rate of 3.2%, which results in 370 GWe of installed capacity in 2050, we would need an improvement factor of 22.
It is easy to assume these political narratives are true by fitting them to the facts like that. Yes, Yucca Mountain is not designed to hold all the waste but that is because that law was written to prevent interim storage until Yucca was operational as an incentive to make it progress which failed.
