not familiar with fire emblem much, but this seems like such a bad game design decision. you don’t spend all that time building up characters to then not use them!!!

fire emblem: what if we made you fall in love with these characters and their feelings and goals and dreams me: omg yes fire emblem: ok youre halfway through the game. what if we forgot about all that because theoretically speaking half of them could be dead. so we cant have them be important. yknow

My hot take is: they should be okay with removing permadeath entirely if they aren't writing the game around those permutations I'm not NOT a fan of permadeath generally but I actually do not think it's super interesting mechanically in FE, it just makes you feel more risk averse overall

I really really want to like it in FE, I just always find myself playing in safe boring ways to keep em alive because I like the specific characters so much. When I turned it off, I realized I was making high risk moves that resulted in cooler organic moments during battles

someone should write a game built around a fire emblem part 1 where most of the cast ends up getting killed and we’re left to navigate the losses, grief and memories. i’d animate for that (although, maybe that’s just valkyrie profile?)
