wdyt about inline functions for utils (assuming they're only used in one function, of course)

I've heard over the years that it's apparently bad for performance, but don't care, still love it (outside of the hotpath)

In what language? JS? it's used extremely heavily in the current compiler, very fast in Go, they are basically just turned into top level functions by the compiler (kinda)

JS yea, I didn't remember you could do it in Go! It's been a while since I last read that, so perhaps it's not even a thing in JS anymore. I think it was something about some V8 optimizations not being possible for those functions IIRC
