You hear a lot of people claim that the United States is full of desperate people who can barely afford to live. On the other hand, this is a country where Dude Wipes have $300 million in retail sales last year.

There are definitely many people in the United States who are struggling economically. But it's also true that the USA is the richest country on earth. The median household income in the Untied States is $83k. That is not destitute.

I didn't say it was destitute, I said two things can be true at once. How we measure wealth, how wealth is distributed, and how humans live and behave despite those numbers are all very different things. It's true for Canada and many European nations as well.

Americans' perception of their own economic precariousness and disadvantage is rooted in entitlement. They believe they deserve better. From the perspective of basically every other country on earth, Americans are rich.

Not to be all like "millennials could afford a house if they stopped buying avocado toast" but... If your country is inventing pumpkin spice dude wipes, your society is rich.
