As part of a consortium of researchers and journalists, I spent the better part of a year digging into leaked documents from Chinese security company Geedge, which plays a pivotal role exporting the Great Firewall around the world: www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/15c699a...

theglobeandmail.comLeaked files show a Chinese company is exporting the Great Firewall’s censorship technologyGeedge Networks is providing censorship capabilities to foreign governments, including those in Myanmar, Pakistan, Ethiopia and Kazakhstan

Geedge was co-founded by Fang Binxing, the “father of the Great Firewall,” and as well as its work overseas is involved in improving the GFW in Xinjiang, Jiangsu and Fujian. It’s a great example of how this type of work has been outsourced to semi private Chinese firms in recent years.

Geedge’s technology suite has been used by client governments to “supercharge their control apparatus” and provide “unprecedented surveillance and censorship capabilities,” write researchers at InterSecLab in their report on the leaks.

Among Geedge’s confidential clients are Myanmar, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan and Pakistan, where Geedge has replaced notorious Canadian censorship company Sandvine as the key provider of tech for Islamabad’s national firewall.
