Quick question: is it common for authors to pitch to smaller imprints directly, or do most still prefer working through agents?

It is common for authors to approach small, independent, and university presses on their own. I wouldn't say any publishers "prefer" working through agents. It's that some require it to reduce unwanted submissions.
