Alberta’s voters list scandal demands a public inquiry. I make that case in the interview below. But, instead of waiting for the results of the many ongoing investigations, there are 8️⃣ things Premier Smith could do in the next week to address the situation.🧵 www.ctvnews.ca/edmonton/vid...

ctvnews.caElections Alberta has become 'part of this scandal': analyst | Alberta PrimetimeJared Wesley, a political science professor at the University of Alberta, joins Alberta Primetime's Michael Higgins to discuss the voter list data breach.

1️⃣ Pause any move to add a separatist referendum question to the fall ballot. Albertans should not be asked to vote on the future of the province while basic questions remain unanswered about whether the voters list, petition process, or "leave" campaign have been compromised.

2️⃣ Order a full audit of voter list data within the UCP, and ask other parties to do the same. Smith can direct her own party, caucus, constituency associations, campaigns, vendors, and contractors to lead by example and certify where voter data is stored and who has accessed it.

3️⃣ Create emergency protections for vulnerable Albertans. This breach is not just about electoral data. It is about the privacy & safety of domestic violence survivors, police, judges, Crown prosecutors, correctional officers, journalists, foster and adoptive families, public officials, and others.

4️⃣ Give Elections Alberta emergency resources and restore their investigative powers. If the independent agency is expected to defend democratic integrity, they need staff, forensic capacity, legal tools, audit powers, and the authority to act before more damage is done.

5️⃣ Appoint a blue ribbon panel on electoral-data security. A respected former judge, privacy commissioner, chief electoral officer, security official, intelligence officer, scholar, and senior public servant could recommend immediate safeguards while a full public inquiry is being established.
