At the risk of starting the flame war to end all flame wars... Modern LLMs (GPT-5.1, Claude 4.5, Gemini 3) produce excellent code and can be a significant productivity boost to software engineers who take the time to learn how to effectively apply them - especially if used with coding agent tools

I wouldn't argue with that, but it supposes that the main issue with software development is the speed of production of code, and it is certainly not. Nothing I have seen has convinced me that no silver bullet is not still valid. We are still not reducing any of the essential complexity.

I'm also a bit anxious about a Jevon's paradox situation. I.e Code is cheaper, so we make and use more of it, which is likely to lead to more issues. Most of the cost of systems is in maintenance not build. We will see, if it was going to have a huge impact we should be seeing it.

The sorts of large enterprises which immediately blocked access to ChatGPT when it appeared for fear of internal data being accessed/trained on are also only now getting around to (stupidly) forcing LLM usage by monitoring whatever they're now using and adding it to perf review processes
