The nice thing about #ffmpeg and #libavdevice is its breathtaking support for video cameras. The not-so-nice thing about it is the near-total lack of tutorials and usage guides. I'm cribbing code from some decade-old college project and it's _still_ not working properly.

...oh, hell. I'd forgotten to set the `video_size` parameter in the dict passed to `avformat_open_input`.
