Maybe you think you are invulnerable to this (you are not), but the people who stay in Twitter because you are still sharing there are definitely being dragged to the right. I have so many mutuals who are still posting regularly there, and it's so disheartening to see. Please stop.

Evidence is already accruing that spending time on Twitter pulls ppl to the right, bc the algorithm feeds you horrible stuff. And again: academics are likely more vulnerable, bc they convince themselves they are less.

I check my political-news account every so often, and Twitter is a blatant conservative grifter psy-op. I've seen left-leaning replies with more comments, more likes, and from blue-check users gets pushed under right-wing blue-checks with less engagement. That site is hell.

Like… I’m still on there?? But the only time I visit anymore is when someone links some good art, and I check the profile to see if the artist is anywhere else before I leave again

I have some friends that just refuse to get off there, and it's beyond disappointing. Like they're not just deciding to chill in the cesspool, by posting there and engaging, they're contributing to it. Any amount of force I could try to persuade them with would make them dig in harder. :/

Leaving twitter was one of the best things I’ve done for my mental health and business . I have far more reach, a much more solid base of folks that follow me. And Bluesky though imperfect, -leagues - better . So glad I’m not contributing to Musk’s fart huffing party.

Speaking from what I've seen; There's at least two really big accounts on here that have been absolutely dragged right thanks to Twitter's algorithm trying to maintain popularity on there. Very few can actually manage to make it "Work" for them and it's just easier to leave Twitter entirely.

Locking your account helps. Moving the app off of the front page of your phone helps. I have more followers on Bluesky in two years than I managed on Twitter in nearly 10. I only ever post there once every month or two with an article saying "get the fuck off Twitter here's why, it's poison."

I stayed on 4chan for a few years throughout my teens and early 20s. That poison stays with you for a long, long time. Xitter is no different.

I tried to stay on 4chan during and after Gamergate happened and while it didn't manage to make me right-wing, it did manage to make me frustrated and cynical and less happy. So: I left Twitter a couple of years ago. I don't need to learn that lesson twice, y'know?

Like how folks who puff out their chest and proudly proclaim they're too smart to fall for scams regularly fall for scams because they never think to put their guard up

I am invulnerable actually because I actually have empathy and like using critical reasoning. I don't go on Twitter anymore though because the posts on there are so insane that it's hard to tell if real people are actually producing the majority of the content there.

people will see the trope of making the ultimate sacrifice for fame, and say "I would never". But it's easier to feign ignorance if you gain it before the devil comes a-knockin' for your soul

Thing that get me the most is the constant "you wont believe whats happening on twitter right now *posts screenshots and links*" like, we left to not see it so don't bring it here? thankfully those post have become less and less on my feed.

You don't even need to make a big deal out of it. Don't need to announce it, no need to delete your account. Just stop posting, stop interacting, maybe remove the shortcut from the first page on your phone so you don't open the app instinctively. Just don't use it, and others will stop with you.

99% of the non English social media space are on Twitter. And for those that post in English, the volume of artists, events, useful content, and commissions can't be matched elsewhere. my feed shows me content that is exclusively artists, furry, gay, muscle, or engineering.

their algorithms fine tune my interests very well. for years, I have yet to see anything that could remotely be considered conservative, problematic, or political (in either direction).

The reasoning behind continuing to use it past the new owner making their changes hasn't made much sense either. It's like trying to use Truth with X vs BS. A perfectly good platform was ruined because he doesn't know how to manage it for everyone and keep what people liked about it and improve it

People really don't understand how to train an algorithm lol Or how to use an ad blocker I could send you a screen recording of my Twitter FYP where you won't see a single post that isn't furry and zero ads

I dunno man. I think it’s impressive what skew can be pushed into a feed from these algos. Especially since they all have random noise from popular posts put in to hit test and nudge. I think it’s a bit presumptive you can train it especially with its ads and out-of-network post spot testing

You are totally right, and you know how to control your account. Do all your followers? It's the people who stick around there because of the others who keep using the site that are the most vulnerable. Some even end up paying for the site, since it's forced upon them to become part of that system.

At what point is someone responsible for someone else's actions? Like if I post a screenshot of a tweet, is that making people engage with the site? What about just mentioning it at all? I agree, you should minimise your negative impact on others but it's not very clear where you should stop

You make the exact point that it's not just black and white. Screenshots bother me a bit, but they don't make me interact with the site. A direct links leads you straight there. Posting there drags your following there. Different levels, but being active there (and paying) I think is the worst.

Nobody's forcing anyone to do anything. Nobody "has" to pay for Twitter. People following me there are doing so because they want to keep using Twitter, they can get the same content here if they so choose I'm not responsible for my followers, full stop. Neither are you. Neither is anyone else

No one is being forced. They are simply taking the route of least resistance. Their friends hanging out there make it easier for them to stick around. If they moved, they would too. Since they hang there, they get fed by the fascist algo (maybe not you—you know how to block things).
