I do think X has one big advantage over BlueSky. Or rather, had. A modern recommender system. Now there's @mysky.social, built on similar architecture, but transparent and controllable. You get all the good stuff, but you don't have to optimize for engagement if you don't want to.

Wondering if something similar could be done for "who to follow" algorithms, basically based on your follows, and activity the recsys would extract signal and predict similar between users and rank them. I've read (a little) that this is challenging to do on bsky (because decentralization?).

It could definitely be done! Not possible in a feed algo, the API just returns a list of posts. But a BSky client could do it, and we're working with several.
