Gonna be a lot of ink spilled abt the President’s assault on the free press from the corp press and I wonder how much is performative For the last 10yrs, he put reporters in holding pens, called them piggy, debased them, called them enemies of the state, etc. & they kept coming back. Access. 1/

They got mad when Biden wouldn’t engage so they took out their knives to say he was old and unfit (true, yes; tho how often do we see old/unfit stories abt our current old/unfit POTUS). They talk to Trump for hours on his cell. He’s a showman who craves attention and reporters know it. 2/

If capital J journalism is supposed to hold people accountable what happens when, after a decade, the reporting doesn’t hold the powerful accountable? How valuable then is access? How impt is a free press when the powerful can do what they want with no repercussion? These are existential times. 3/

This seems like a very prudent course of action for the WHCA. I am not sanguine they will do any of this. bsky.app/profile/froo...

Trump treats WH reporters like shit. They should respond in kind. No more deference. Talk back to him. Tell him he just lied, and didn’t answer the question. Correct him. Confront him with reality. Ask him why he surrounds himself with sycophants. Ask him if he’s lying or just crazy.

Also pay attention to which (if any) advertisers speak up on behalf of journalism. “We support a free and independent press” is a common refrain from business leaders. Now would be good for biz leaders to show not tell. Take out full page ads. Run PSAs. 5/
