alt history where the louisiana territory stays culturally french but has a revolution to become independent; spain keeps the western US but mexico still has a revolutionary war; and Greater Mexico is the dominant superpower in north america

canada gains an unusual amount of power when it builds the transcontinental railroad (since it allows the other countries to only negotiate a single treaty to ship things between coasts). the mexican-american war still happens but it's over Florida, not Texas, and permanently sours the relationship

after the invention of the railroad, and with no access to either coast, the Louisiana territory becomes a cultural backwater that relies almost solely on its food exports. it is devastated by the dust bowl and never recovers, selling most of the great plains region in the early 1950s

without dominance over the continent, the US keeps a much larger standing army in peacetime, eventually invading various islands in the carribbean. it remains primarily a naval power, but without enough strength to challenge Great Mexico in south america, the panama canal is built by mexico instead

without Pearl Harbor, the US stays neutral during WWII and Nazi Germany rules most of Europe for a few decades before collapsing due to infighting after Hitler's death. its war with Russia never really ends, and guerilla warfare continues for a decade despite the germans retreating to the ukraine

the british empire remains largely independent, although isolated. the mines in Shinkolobwe are controlled by britain, who is the first to build the atomic bomb. israel, of course, is never founded, and the Turkey/Syria becomes an uneasy demilitarized zone between germany and the british middle east
