I'd argue it was *strategically* horrible as well. She was (vaguely) aware of the avalanche of anti-trans lawfare and (vaguely) aware The Optics on trans people were ~CoNtRovERsiAL~ and so made the conscious choice to distance herself from the entire issue (the right's obsessive transphobia).
