Interesting thread on interesting thread, and kind of making me wonder if this is part of the very strong author pushback against AI. Obv the stolen books, the attempt to put many kinds of artists out of work, the copying of our voices...but also, we make up imaginary people all the time.

But again - literacy crisis and creative crisis - the characters I make up when I write are almost certainly not beings who can autonomously communicate new experiences to you without my involvement.

I'm with Racheline: I don't read the reported speech or emails of AI and see consciousness or personhood. I just see crafted dialogue, usually elaborately strung out to cover a void in meaning (if you're saying 'takes one to know one' there, fair enough.

Not saying I have a magic author ability to discern AI writing or any such. Just...I think if you worked in a googly eye factory, you would become relatively immune to the anthropomorphic effect of putting googly eyes on inanimate objects.

Huh. I had never thought about it from this angle. I'm going to have to contemplate my relationship to the googly eyes box for a few days.
