I think the 'overview effect' moment for me was trying to learn other languages and realising humans everywhere are basically saying the exact same things, the exact same way, just with different sounds. Down to the same kind of sayings and expressions.

Nerdy folks, catty girls, drunk uncles, cringe teens, all these tropes exist in just about every culture doing the same kinda thing you know them for, just... elsewhere. It was genuinely surprising just how non-alien and exactly alike most cultures turn out to be beyond the food, clothes, and music

I think one of the things that shocked me the most is sometimes even idioms have (almost) 1 to 1 translations Like it's an expression that by definition means something different and yet is still translated similarly, how does that even happen?

Exactly! It's so hard to think of precise examples out of context, and whenever I see an example I end up forgetting it. But I will sometimes find something phrased exactly the same as we say it in English and it catches me off guard haha
