For mid-October, flight prices are definitely not going down from here. In fact, they usually spike when you get within two weeks of departure, with airlines taking advantage of last minute bookers. In the future I recommend setting up the Google Flights price tracker at least four months ahead.

The price tracker has been set up since we decided on going, prices just never really got affordable, sadly

This would be the effect of ORD being a major hub then, airline prices don't decrease because they don't *have* to :\ You could probably take the Amtrak California Zephyr, just make sure you account for the extra travel time
