I'm all on board for complaining about religion as anyone. But this exists separately from religion. It exists anywhere someone believes they are special - better than other people. And rather than identifying with the humanity in others, seeing others as a resource to be exploited.

I agree with your last point but I do think it's more likely to result in abuse in certain religious environments and that the nature of a religion can make this easier or more likely.
