If we're talking big structural reforms: eliminate most if not all tax deductions, credits, exemptions, allowances, etc, for individuals & businesses, then lower rates to compensate. Broader Base Lower Rate. This would also make enforcement & filing easier (& of course do pre-filled forms).

E.g., i might be ok w/ corporate income tax rate cuts of 35% -> 21% (about Sweden's rate) if we get rid of all loopholes & deductions. I believe the biggest individual exemption to repeal is for employer-paid health insurance premiums. Tax that as income. Lower rates to compensate if you must.

But Paul Krugman in 2007 (Conscience of a Lib) warned that new, broad-based taxes (i.e., on the middle class) should come "after libs have established a long track record of successfully using the gov't to make peoples' lives better & more secure." Namely, w/ universal health insurance.

Yeah, they did do that, & they will again. Every time we've done big tax reform (1954, 1986, maybe more), interest groups successfully restored their preferred deductions, exemptions, loopholes, etc. That doesn't mean we shouldn't keep reforming, but we do need a plan to protect reforms.

I'm fine w/ some nationalization &/or a sovereign wealth fund but no, the US is nowhere near willing or able to seize all industry, & I prob wouldn't want that. To defend tax reform & reduce the sway of the wealthy & interest groups, I'm thinking the For the People Act & PRO Act, to start.
