The CDC has declared the cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce over. Nearly 13,000 cases in 21 states have been linked to Taylor Farms lettuce. 570 people have been hospitalized and two have died.

The CDC said that there is no longer a risk of people getting sick with cyclospora from Taylor Farms’ iceberg lettuce, and that fewer than two infections per day occurred in August, on average.

The latest best-by date on the recalled lettuce was Aug. 3, meaning that the affected lettuce should not be available in stores or restaurants. But new cases have still mounted in the weeks since, in part because it takes so long to become sick from cyclospora.

The FDA is also investigating four smaller cyclospora outbreaks, the largest of which has 231 cases. They have not yet identified the sources of these outbreaks.

N.B. The parasite species responsible for human infections, Cyclospora cayetanensis, exclusively infects and multiplies within humans. Because of this narrow host range, there is no animal reservoir. i.e. No bull shit.

So 60 per month.💩fecal oral and it takes ~10 days for the parasite to “mature” to infectious”. The implication is Taylor Farms was central to the problem and no other processing/delivery. No longer a risk and 60 per month is like saying the sum off 9+9 = 6+6 if you stand on your head.
