It pisses me off that we had/have a chance to build something new and more open with Bluesky & Mastodon, more open-web, not owned by an actual fascist who is actively helping Trump, Republicans and all the worst far-right people everywhere, spreading their propaganda and helping with algorithms…

… but everyone needs to do their part because of the network effects, every popular account posting here and not posting there matters; and some people just don't care and refuse to help. Because the content is there, readers are there, they don't follow Musk, they don't care who owns the platform.

It felt like it was happening back in late 2024, but it's all been losing steam since then. And people stay there or move back because there's more tech/AI/whatever people & content there, and instead of doing *some* work to try to move those people here, they just accept it as "it is what it is"…

The platforms that try to respect their users don't tend to intentionally implement a bunch of dark patterns to capture as much of their users' attention, time and money as possible... if one platform is addictive and the alternative is not, people won't move, or at least they won't be as active.

Yeah:

i think people take a lot of bluesky’s benefits and features for granted, the chief of which are the lack of ads, being friendly to links/publishers, an open ecosystem, and the lack of giant teams working all hours to keep people on their app as much as possible
