2. I read through hundreds of pages of legal documents filed by trans prisoners in Florida going as far back as 2016. The stories are truly shocking and revolting. And I was writing this piece as wildfire tore through my city and forced me to prepare to evacuate, though thankfully I'm okay.

3. But this is not about me. The documents show that trans prisoners have faced extraordinarily cruel and inhumane punishments in Florida for years, including humiliating and horrific descriptions of forced hair cuts and confiscations of female undergarments.

4. Reiyn Keohane, the lead plaintiff on this case, secured a much better (though still flawed) FDC policy after her previous lawsuit in 2016 was filed. This policy lasted around 6 years and allowed several other trans women to begin their medical and social transition--until September 2024.

5. On September 2024, guards in riot gear rounded up all 80 trans women in her prison and lined them up outside with armed guards watching then from guard towers to announce the policy. Reiyn alleges that one officer said to “make sure they line them up where the ones with guns can see them.”

6. Since then, several women who had waited decades for medical treatment are now at risk for having their hormones taken away and forced into menopause. All trans inmates are already subject to forced social detransition procedures (including hair), and this has been in effect since October 2024.
