The extent of the programmes being cut at the University of Edinburgh (where I took part in an event with Raja Shehadeh a fortnight ago) is extraordinary (archive.is/tACqv) - Celtic & Scottish Lit (UG), Scottish Literature (UG) & BD Divinity (UG) among the 90, not to mention Arabic & Persian.

'The University and College Union (UCU)’s Edinburgh branch said staff had been called into “informal meetings at less than 24 hours' notice” and told not to bring union representatives.'

My kid had a splendid education there, BA in linguistics, including elective classes in Gallic and Basque. Eviscerating the University is a terrible idea

I've long had a soft-spot for Edinburgh (one of my all-time favourite books, Henry Grey Graham's 'Scottish Men of Letters in the Eighteenth Century, still makes me laugh out loud) & I can't help thinking if Edinburgh University can't provide programmes in Economics, Scottish Literature etc, who can?

It’s not all of Economics being binned. But staggering how, if this scale of cuts is indeed justified, how bad the management must have been to reach this point. Who has been minding the shop at the top?

Exactly. When they claim that VC and SMT salaries need to be six-figure to ensure 'leadership', where is the evidence that this money is well-spent? And if the only solution is 'sack lecturers & close programmes' (a suggestion an unimaginative toddler might come up with) what are we paying for?
