Republicans frequently use that trick. That’s why they’re so angry that it’s being used against them.

It’s probably happening in Montana right now, and oddly right wing dark money is accusing two of the four candidates on the ballot of being right wing plants (and it might also be true in both cases, even though it seems likely neither candidate is aware of that!) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alvin_G...

It probably happens occasionally but can be difficult to prove.
