It’s not all elections at #ucu. This afternoon I’m joining the induction for the new Congress Business Committee, the elected body that determines how our annual congress runs. This year it will be in Harrogate at the end of May. Congress is our peak democratic body, but how democratic is it?

Many members are not aware of how UCU’s decisions are made. Branches and other bodies should elect delegates to Congress. But many branches send no reps, and many more don’t have contested elections. Congress is therefore not always representative of members. What can be done about this?

We’ve done some great work recently to make Congress more accessible, including establishing hybrid approaches, and allowing delegates to split across different days. You can now join Congress from home! Branches can now engage more reps and members and work to ensure their branch is represented.

Members can also work locally to ensure that your delegates represent the branch. Why not nominate to be your branch’s delegate? Why not bring a motion on something that matters to you? Why not ask for a meeting to take a collective view? It’s your union and all of us have a role in shaping it.
