wait, so keeping your computers inside a vacuum, famously used for thermal *insulation*, makes cooling more difficult? who could’ve guessed? it’s honestly impressive both how little thinking these CEOs do themselves and the complete lack of listening to any critique from their own engineers!

What makes you think the CEOs don’t understand this? I’m pretty sure they do. It’s not like cooling in space is impossible, it’s just that you need to lift a huge radiator into orbit, which increases the cost. Whether it’s economical is not obvious without having done the calculation carefully

i guess the real answer (apart from the niche uses by other satellites themselves to compensate for a slower downlink, which isn’t something that they’ve marketed) is PR. ”hey look, we’re doing this science-fiction thing for real!”

if you have industrialised space manufacturing, there's a lot of things you can 3d print in orbit rather than lift into space (insert asteroid mining setup here, since you probably won't be able to mine what you need from an industrialised moon)

the cooling issue is one thing but another thing is that we can't send infinite satellites into orbit, we will create a cloud of debris that will keep us grounded elon will never get to mars if he keeps putting things in orbit...
