Listen to Anil. Screaming about how tech is evil doesn't help. Making sure that the tech is used properly with the control in the hands of people to empower themselves, rather than at the whims of billionaires enriching themselves is important.

This is true, but the larger scam pattern (web3/metaverse/crypto/etc) is what many of us are trying to give voice to — folks have to recognize that letting those bad actors define "tech" is just like media letting bad actors frame every other "debate". It's losing before we even start.

I don’t see a way, as an example, NFTs went differently. I don’t think there’s an amount of “proper NFT use advocacy” that overpowers greed and potential for scams. I don’t think “well we should have taken control of an Ethereum-like blockchain as a form of preventing all the bad stuff” holds up

The constant screaming and yelling at people on Bluesky who even dare to mention the ways they use tools in an empowering way is getting pretty ridiculous and it doesn't help. There are ways to use tech well. Figure those out. Make the world better rather than just screaming at people.

I use it as a tool every single day. I've talked about it in the past, but every time I explain it again here, I get yelled at so I won't explain it again.

True. But it's as I've always felt about technology: it's fine - it's good and it will continue to advance. But the biggest challenges we face are not technological. They are about moral leadership. We need to moral leadership to enable us to use technology in ways that truly advance society. /1

Having said that - and it occurs to me that you in particular are worth discussing this with - I feel like the screechers have half a point, in that the way AI/LLM is currently being developed, provisioned and commercialized/imposed neither can nor should be sustainable.

It’s hard to see how the current investment at the hyperscalars can be sustained, which means everything downstream of them is at existential risk. But it seems like there are alternatives, and the potential for a much more democratic (and energy efficient) approach to AI.

Some of it feels like an “all tech is bad” sort of philosophy forming. That’s a real losing battle. I’m not ever going to approach new technology that way.

I hope commenting negatively on AI doesn't get me blocked because I think this discussion is good. I'm comfortable that you use a little hallucination machine to bounce ideas off. I sit and think up ideas by stewing up my own thoughts and seeing what cooks up. A tool that does that is pretty cool!

A good example of your last point. This is all pointing in a positive direction. bsky.app/profile/surf...
