Thank you! I do poke my head over to Mastodon now and then, but the bridging makes it easier in general to focus most of my attention on one rather than both.

Are you organized as a non-profit? If not, have you considered that? I’m sure you are aware of the potential benefits & drawbacks. But with a renewed need for reader support, it may make more sense now than it did 5 years ago.

Yeah, we've looked into it a few times over the years, and it's always tended to be more trouble than it's worth for a variety of reasons. We have at times partnered with non-profits to act as fiscal sponsors of grants, but only for larger grants, not small individual donations.

We don't. We've investigated it at times, but honestly did not appear worth it. For larger projects, we have partnered with (c)(3)s to act as fiscal sponsors.

For those willing to support us at $100 or more, we're offering the very first (hopefully of many annual ones to come) Techdirt commemorative coin (yes, a real, physical coin). This first one, for 2026, is celebrating 30 years of Section 230.

I wrote up a much longer explanation of why we're doing this and why we need support now, more than ever here. The simple fact is that our outspokenness over the last year resulted in organizations that used to sponsor our work pulling back. So we need some help from you. bsky.app/profile/tech...

Support Techdirt’s Uncompromising Coverage, Get Our First Commemorative Coin If you've been following along, you know why independent voices matter right now. The administration has been attacking institutions left and right. News orgs, law firms, philanthropic funders, universities, you name it.…

I absolutely hate fundraising appeals. I hate writing this thread. But some friends have yelled at me that I'm being stupid and should ask publicly for help when we need it. And we need it. We don't want to do annoying things like paywalls, overloading the site with ads, or any nonsense like that.

We want people to come and enjoy the content at Techdirt. We want people to be able to view it without being bogged down by intrusive ads, or having to register just to read an article (let alone pay). We want people to be able to share our work. But we need to be able to support that.
