Just a general reminder that your experience on any social media app depends a lot on what *you* make of it. It is easy to find some annoying people on any platform. But platforms like Bluesky also give *you* way more power to control your own experience and to fix whatever annoys you.

How can I fix that Bluesky now keeps hiding replies from people, even when the replies seem just fine, based on a machine learning model that can't be disabled?

(Randomly, just checked in on X and the only algorithm there recommended to me someone saying they had come back to X from Bluesky. The guy came here for... TWO WHOLE DAYS and then whined "the algorithm didn't get what I wanted." Dude, you get to choose your own algorithm here. Or make your own.)

Yeah. SO MANY PEOPLE leave Bluesky and complain that the algorithm (which one?) here doesn’t magically spoon-feed them everything they want to see. People are way too used to algorithms doing everything for them. God forbid you should have to find & follow interesting people yourself!

I must be lucky to be in the last generation that got used to actually finding interesting people and things to follow, rather than expecting the content machine will do it for me. Way too many are content to basically be those doughy blobby humans in ‘Wall-E’.

I know! Hell, you follow ONE interesting person who reposts other interesting people, then follow those people and see their reposts, and before you know it you’re following dozens to hundreds of peeps and your feed is so full you can barely keep up. It’s already super easy!

Serious question: why do you use Discover then? There are well over 100k other feeds to try. I am perplexed by people who complain about discover without fixing it themselves.

The feed discovery tools are abysmal (even still; I was away for a year during the MS blackout). Tried making my own feeds, but the free feed generators show so little content. Bluesky Directory is helpful, but it shouldn't be so difficult to find and operate feeds on the native platform.

Why would anyone WANT to be force-fed sewage by a machine? That is completely alien to me. It reminds me of the first time I saw a jukebox with a button that said, "Play the most popular selection on this jukebox" (late '80s) and I could not wrap my head around having no personal preferences.

Agree, and I will mention that I receive NONE of the horrible content that so many others report that they receive on "the other" social media app. I must be an exception, but it's clearly what I do and do not do that drives content.
