"The gop has always had the advantage in a nation with conservative traditions. " No, it hasn't. Have you read any history of what this country was like before Reagan? From 1932-1980, Dems consistently maintained large majorities in Congress, with brief and underwhelming exceptions.

Even in recent decades, the GOP has been mired at about 30% of the vote. Meanwhile, the Dems have been content to stay at roughly the same size. Worse, every time they've "triangulated", chasing R voters, they've gotten even less popular. The bloc of independent voters is larger than either party.
