What a nightmare, I've been there too with hosting providers making changes indiscriminately and we're left investigating what's going on. Hard to fault them, besides the lack of communication, because they're just trying to keep their servers online. Thanks for the ideas & resources at the end!

Yes, I actually edited a part out that went into more detail. As in your case as well, I had to investigate myself what was happening and was accused of โ€œputting myself into one boat with bad actorsโ€ if I use a VPN. It took quite a bit of persistence to get them to โ€œadmitโ€ what filter they added.

It's unfortunate that you had to back them into a corner to finally admit it. They do tend to assume a high level of autonomy and aren't used to being questioned like that. Good for you for staying firm and getting to the bottom of it!

But yes, you canโ€™t really blame them because they need to protect their servers and other customers. It was weird though that they decided to block countries like Canada and the Netherlands โ€“ but not Shanghai or China, where a significant amount of traffic was/is coming from.

Very interesting stuff you found out. So you completely moved away from All-Inkl? Iโ€™m asking because, as of now, all my websites are hosted at All-Inkl too.

For now, I only moved my site over to a VPS. The domain points to that server now, but is still at all-inkl. As are other domains, email, and other stuff. I donโ€™t have client sites there, though.

Except for the fact that they didnโ€™t tell me that they added a filter and I had to investigate myself and convince them that in fact *they* changed something, I was happy with them and a customer for >16 years now. And even that they did at least *something* can be seen as a positive, I guess โ€ฆ

Thanks for the explanation. I just checked my contract, and Iโ€™ve been a happy customer for 20 years now. But itโ€™s good to know what happened to you, what might happen to so many other website owners, and ways how to prevent that.

I had a similar problem on client websites, although admittedly a fair proportion of the traffic was bots scanning for WordPress vulnerabilities etc. I don't use WordPress but it hit my CMS API to see if the URLs exist. AI crawlers have just made this worse by crawling actual URLs.

My site just was under heavy load from Singapore again LOL. ๐Ÿคฃ Temporarily blocked the whole country via ipset now so that my site is available again โ€ฆ

Thankyou for writing and sharing about this. I still believe in the open web, but it's getting hard to find the enthusiasm to keep creating when I'm treated as mere fodder for billionaires to chew up and spit out. I'm gonna give this a go next month when I get some time.

Really appreciate you taking the time to write this, I've used it to explain the issue to a few clients today โญ
