how it feels to find out your ipv6 setup was fine and that it was just your network drivers causing the problem #networking

for context, I was setting up opnsense on virtualbox, and looking to do prefix delegation from my home router to the VM one. routes were automatically created fine, and when pinging google from behind the new router, the WAN on my home router would see the echo replies, but wouldn't forward them.

turns out the home router was not completing NDP with the virtual one. i was using a bridged adapter for the "WAN" on my virtual router, bridged to a wifi card. switching to ethernet instead immediately fixed the problem.
