There are 2 positions on housing. YIMBYs believe we should build enough housing for everyone. NIMBYs believe we should only build housing for people who *really deserve it* and that they should get to pick and choose who gets to live in their neighborhood.

"We need housing for teachers." "We need housing for artists." "We need housing for firefighters." This command and control shit drives me crazy. Just build enough housing for people.

Right NIMBYs believe that they should be able to exclude poor people. Zoning is a very effective tool for this purpose. Left NIMBYs believe that they should be able to exclude rich and/or uncool people. Zoning is a bad tool for this, which is why houses in the Mission now cost 3 million dollars.

You either welcome the stranger or you don't. There is no "only build housing for the truly morally deserving and/or people I want to hang out with" policy lever, no matter how hard you post about Community Land Trusts.

it's also impossible to separate this from immigration policy. You either believe people should get to live where they want, and make policies to move towards that goal, or you don't.

I am fine with having sober living as an option but the whole “you need to get off drugs before we give you a safe place to sleep” Thing is insane. I would probably do drugs if I was trying to stay alive while living on the streets and in danger 24/7.
