I got to live in LA as a marginally-employed skateboard photographer for 10 years because I slept on a couch for the first 2 years, split a 5br house with 7 roommates for the next 5, then moved in with my now-husband. Thanks to the housing shortage, that isn’t possible anymore. We have to build.

My most personal essay yet. Creative people need slack - time and space to try things and fail for a while. LA used to be cheap enough to give us that, but no more. All the tax credits and other efforts to save Hollywood will be for naught if there are no creative people left here to hire.

When I graduated highschool in 98 you could rent in Hollywood for less than a thousand a month. Down in Orange County it was possible to get a studio for less then 500.

Look at my man here in the linked story with his luxury ramen. I lived in an art co-op in downtown Phoenix when Nissin ramen was still 10 for a buck, *cough* years ago. If I had not bought my house here in Portland 20 years ago, I'd have to work another 10 years to retire.

Ha! I think my ramen cost about the same in 2002, but a Korean friend showed me how to gussy it up.
