I can't see Audioculture's post anymore, and I refuse to go rabbit-hole spelunking today, but I can give you this: Alien Weaponry have won Rockquest, won AMAs, got a (non-Silver Scroll) APRA award, and a best debut award at the Taites. So... APRARQAMAT?

175 stream plays = 1 sale by RMNZ’s formula, and you need 15,000 to get Gold, right? So that’s 2,650,000 stream Plays. Apple Pie Bed has apparently been played 16,814,213 times on Spotify alone. Is 85% of his audience really outside NZ?

85% of Apple Pie Bed's audience? Quite possibly. I'm guessing that Spotify chucked it on 'Upbeat Coffeeshop Afternoon' or whatever curated playlist it was throwing at everyone in 2016.
