& as was the case then (and still) there are real and serious reasons to be a "doomer," but the specific fears shaping elite response are misjudged and i am not optimistic about the shape of the policy that will emerge, if any

I was thinking it's just a way to delay the inevitable collapse of people realizing frontier models are no longer developing at the claimed exponential rate. Just say we're doing it slower on purpose to avoid catastrophe. Just trust us, our private models are super smart and scary.
