I'm inclined to think what's happening here with "Jewish" is the same thing as we get with "working class" - the reactionary fash press finds some subset of a demographic that agrees with their own monstrous blood lust, and says if you disagree with that you actually disagree with "all Jews."

I mean they do it because it has worked so far, but can't help but feel turning the hate dials up to 11 and screaming that the Irish author and your nan are in fact terrifying avatars of hate is going to hit a breaking point.

I don't think they even care about finding people who agree with them. "Jewish" in this framing simply means "white". The root of the attack against Rooney is the same as that against Corbyn -that they are "anti-white" and "anti-West".
