In 2023, conifer-pollen 14C dates at White Sands Locality 2 looked “statistically indistinguishable” from aquatic Ruppia seed dates because the pollen procedural blank left >2,000-yr error bars. In Science Advances (doi:10.1126/sciadv.aeh0707), Springer et al. cut those uncertainties 5×.

Using >110 ka Ziegler Reservoir pollen as a matched blank resolves a variable hard-water offset: up to ~1,330 14C yr in lower Lake Otero beds, decaying to ~0 by TH1 as groundwater gave way to overland flow. All 20 footprint horizons still date to 23.5–21.7 ka, starting at the 23.2 ka D-O 2 drying.
