"The average Briton's wealth has fallen by more than a fifth over the past 5 years". If only there were an obvious reason why. I can't think of anything significant happening around 5 years ago that could make Britain so vulnerable. Let's make the person that made Brexit happen our Prime Minister.

... And this is the fundamental reason that the hospitality industry is failing. What used to be affordable isn't any more. If income had gone up at the same rate as prices, £8 for coffee and cake or £30 for steak and chips wouldn't look so eye watering.

Exactly this. Even just a coffee/cafe trip is a luxury to so many now, never mind a full on meal out.
