yes, this. this country has been talking big and falling short since "all men are created equal" and you're either the type of person who thinks it's patriotic to ignore how short we have always fallen, or you're the type of person who thinks it's patriotic to stop falling so fucking short.

Thesis: ICE is un-American and the Minneapolis protestors are real Americans. Antithesis: Ackshually ICE is operating in a long American tradition of racist terror. Synthesis: Minneapolis is now the epicenter of a clash between two distinct but historically grounded American political traditions.

I know which one I'm going to pick! And the first step to that kind of patriotism is always, always, always accepting that we have been falling short this whole time. You have to know where we're failing to see how to fix it.
