looking at ocarina of time remake footage it's kinda funny that i, as someone who has historically never understood the mainstream annoyance at navi, am looking at these little text quips they gave her and reflexively rolling my eyes and going "oh come on shut the fuck up"

i get the idea behind making her do this. take the character that's mostly tutorial prompt and try to give her more of a presence in the journey and more character along with it. but from the limited footage it looks like she's just saying what she's seeing and she comes off as like. an idiot lol

This is the new Nintendo design theory that started with super Mario wonder. The player always needs a flower or fairy or Funky Kong who speaks positive reinforcement out loud to shepherd the player towards the goal. Like how you encourage a baby to crawl by making gibberish noises when moves

like her going "WOW BIG BRIDGE" when you approach a big bridge or "THAT WAS WEIRD!" when you disappear one of the song of time blocks (she literally says this) isnt fleshing out the character it's taking the player by the shoulders and shaking them and going WOW L@@K and not letting anything breathe

In the original i have always found the “listen!” and “look!” shouts to be cute but if all these extra little callouts about any random thing happening are voice acted, i may finally join the navi hater squad lol

anyway much like the dastardly navi this was just me idly commenting on a thing a saw and i dont feel like having my notifs drown in classic pro/anti-skub style situation. AND i think the mario wonder flowers are largely fine

she's doing the thing they're doing to every possible screenplay for people who aren't paying attention to the TV and looking at their phones, except she doesn't say the lines out loud, and it's a video game so you'd better be looking at the TV

now it's been pointed out to me that she comments on this in the original as well. so maybe i, at least, am overreacting a bit. maybe it doesn't happen any more often than in the original. in which case, sure fine. that's fine, if sometimes annoying
