*ḱwō "dog" across Indo-European. Latin canis, Greek kýōn, Germanic *hundaz, Celtic cú, Lithuanian šuõ, Sanskrit śván. Twist: English kept the root three ways, hound (Germanic), canine (Latin), cynic (Greek). But everyday "dog" is origin unknown. Spanish did the same with "perro."
