*weid-: one PIE root for "to see" and "to know" at the same time. Latin vidēre gave vision, video, evident. Germanic witan gave wit, witness, wise, wisdom. Sanskrit vid- gave Veda, literally "that which is known." Russian still has both: ведать (know), видеть (see).
