One of the largest immigration detention centers on the west coast is located in Tacoma, Washington. It's a private prison run by GEO Group. To my knowledge, the mayor of the city has never visited the prison to check on the facilities nor her constituents who are detained there.

Notably in 2021, the company operating the prison lost a suit over paying detainees $1 a day to do cooking, janitorial, and other services. Rather than paying detainees the minimum wage, they terminated the detainee labor the program. apnews.com/article/immi...
