Also, if the roof can be seen from a conservation area you need special permission even on a modern house 🤷‍♂️

This is very well stated. As an occasional* rooftop PV installer, my riposte is generally: "well if you think putting PV on roofs is easy, you fit a few, because I can tell you it's skilled, dangerous and physically hard work!" (*I'm mainly a heat pump installer but sometimes help our PV team)

Right! Understandably given that and the need for safety its not surprising the economics dont add up!
